Physical activity is very important for mental and personal development. Running is one of the easiest and natural sports to do. Running gives you a sense of purpose and boost your self esteem and confidence. I am naturally a shy person but running has helped me to express myself and give me great confidence and feeling of well being.

Feeling of well being

From a very young age I went out and ran around the fields on the family farm. I played camogie with my sisters and football with my brothers. I loved the feeling of being fit and active.

If you exercise your aerobic conditioning will be superior to your friends who are physically inactive. Running ensures that a fitness routine is followed later in life, which is important for longevity and overall health.

Running provides many valuable life-learning tools

It not only keeps you physically fit and healthy it also provides many valuable life-learning tools that can harness your development for life. For example, better concentration for academic work. The building of confidence, time management skills and participating within a team as an individual.

Running is a form of meditation

It allows our thoughts and worries to float away and helps us to deal with life challenges and look on things in a positive manner. It allows you to be in tune with yourself and to believe anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

Get into a routine of doing a little bit of exercise most days of the week. It doesn’t have to be running. You could go for a good brisk walk, cycle, tennis, football and have fun with your friends and you will feel great afterwards.

Emphasis is on having fun and feeling good in yourself

The emphasis isn’t on competition or covering specific distances, but on having fun and feeling good in yourself.

It’s a good idea to keep an exercise diary and every night write down the activity you did that day. This can be a great incentive to get out and exercise and you can look back and see all you have done and this is very satisfying and encouraging.

                                                        Long bright summer evenings

Now with the long bright summer evenings get out in the fresh air and have fun. You will see that there is so much more to life than being glued to electronic devices.
