Donaghmede native,\nDamien Dempsey joined forces with the dynamic team from Munster Music Academy<\/a>\nand the students of Scoil\nCholmcille SNS<\/a> on April 25th<\/sup> last, to get young and\nold around Ireland involved in the #SongsandStories<\/strong>\nproject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative \nis the brainchild of the Galway based platform, Inspiring You<\/a>, which compromises of\ntwo friends, Philip Cribbin<\/strong> and Kamil Krolak<\/strong>, who work in education and\nmedia. Together they strive to engage young people in real life activities and\nto use social media less.  The duo teamed up with leading Irish musician Damien\nDempsey<\/strong><\/a> and Munster Music Academy<\/a>\nto nurture and awaken the craft of storytelling, tunes, folk traditions\nand songs which has been part of culture for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raising\nthe roof in Scoil Cholmcille\u2019s!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can watch the video of Damo<\/strong> and the Munster Music Academy<\/strong> musicians receiving a rapturous reception from over 200 staff and students during his recent visit here<\/a>. Clare native and 5th<\/sup> class teacher, Ms. Isabelle Brennan<\/strong>, helped organise the visit, and led her class on a sing song that will live long in the memory where her students sang, \u201cThe Rattlin\u2019 Bog\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cBeidh aonach amarach\u201d<\/strong>. Damo sang his evocative, \u201cBustin\u2019 outta here\u201d<\/strong> as requested by the students. The young fans had plenty of questions for the Dublin balladeer including asking what his all-time favourite song was!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00fachas\narchive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The, \u201cSongs\nand Stories\u201d<\/strong> concept is simple. We want to encourage\nchildren and schools to make time for songs, stories and tunes in everyday\nlife. The D\u00fachas<\/a>\narchive from 1937, as championed by John\nCreedon<\/strong>, is a vast well everyone can draw from.  Founders of Munster Music Academy, Pius McGrath and\nTara Doolan<\/strong>, together with Damien<\/strong>,\nare leading advocates for cultural appreciation, social inclusion, wellbeing,\nresilience through music, tunes, songs and stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of the memorable visit was when\nDamien was presented with a copy of, \u201cSongs\nand Stories\u201d <\/strong>gathered by Ms.Brennan\u2019s class. The book is filled with tall\ntales, myths, legends and family history with a range from Rwanda to London by\nScoil Cholmcille students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit of the Munster Music Academy, who\nwill lead the project with Inspiring You, and Damien finished with the entire\nschool singing, \u201cThe Rare Ould Times\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hope that \u201cOuld times\u201d<\/strong> will become more common place with families, clubs, community groups and students of all ages when they engage in #SongandStories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
