Tomi Reichental<\/strong> is a man who unfortunately has been through a lot in his life. As a young 9 year old boy<\/strong> he was imprisoned in the Bergen Belsen<\/strong> concentration camp. The 75th anniversary<\/strong> of the liberation of the camp is the 15th of April 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne Frank<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Tomi<\/strong> lost 35 members of his family during the Holocaust but never lost his ability to show empathy to others.
Anne Frank<\/a> was a fellow prisoner of Tomi\u2019s but sadly she didn\u2019t survive. Prior to her imprisonment Anne spent an incredible 761 days in social isolation.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting children inspired<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is a great honour to have <\/strong>Tomi <\/strong>support our #InspiringYou<\/strong> interview <\/a>series where children from around the country are being given the opportunity to send questions to some of Ireland\u2019s leading personalities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomi\u2019s interview with 9 year old Se\u00e1n<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Tomi was 9<\/strong> when he was imprisoned and lost his childhood. Se\u00e1n was also 9 when he met Tomi<\/strong> for an interview <\/a>and he asked Tomi <\/strong>about his life, childhood. The emotive interview dealt centred on how we can work together to help prevent such evil acts happening again. The video has received over 40,000 views on Inspiringyouirl on Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A child\u2019s insight<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Se\u00e1n<\/strong> got some great answers from Tomi <\/strong>on bullying, homelessness<\/strong> and racism<\/strong>. It made for a powerful interview. Sometimes a child\u2019s insight adds a clearer perspective on the need for empathy<\/strong> and love<\/strong> in our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#InspiringTomi art & writing competition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We are currently running the #InspiringTomi competition<\/strong> for primary school children. We want children to be creative and reflective.  You can write a story, poem, song<\/strong> or make a short video, take a photo or design a piece of art<\/strong> inspired by the themes discussed in the video or connected with Tomi\u2019s story.<\/strong> Deadline for entries is May the 1st.<\/strong> Check #InspiringTomi competition<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#InspiringYou<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The idea for #InspiringYou<\/strong> is for us to inspire each other<\/strong> and to help children dream of a brighter tomorrow<\/strong>. It would be great if the #InspiringYou<\/strong> interviews help start conversations in families around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s good to talk<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In 1937<\/strong> the Irish government<\/strong> felt that children were too busy to talk to their family and neighbours<\/strong>! They made it part of their homework to write down family history, folklore, songs<\/strong> etc. Their work is now part of the amazing Duchas Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family history<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is unusual that children have so much free time so maybe they use it effectively to learn about their local and family history<\/strong>? In these challenging times we can encourage our children to ring or write to elderly relatives<\/strong> and record stories that influenced their lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A brighter tomorrow<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the words of Anne Frank<\/strong> \u201cWhat is done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it happening again.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
