{"id":5854,"date":"2018-11-15T23:34:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T23:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/?p=5854"},"modified":"2020-02-04T22:00:54","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T22:00:54","slug":"57-year-old-documents-recommending-medals-for-heroism-unearthed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/57-year-old-documents-recommending-medals-for-heroism-unearthed\/","title":{"rendered":"57-year old\u00a0documents for heroism unearthed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>The story of how a peace keeping force of a mere 155 men of \u201cA\u201d Company survived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9_JHsiQTTmg\">The Siege of Jadotville<\/a> has become the stuff of legend.\u00a0 \u00a0Thanks to the military genius of the late<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/ireland\/2017\/1028\/915966-jadotville-plaque-kenny\/\"> Col.Pat Quinlan<\/a> all of the men survived.\u00a0 The men fought against\u00a0an enemy force of 3,000 without any fatalities.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bravery medals yet to be awarded after 57 years<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sadly due to a number of factors the men were not recognised for\u00a0their actions by the government and the military.\u00a0 Col. Quinlan recommended\u00a0five men\u00a0for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.ie\/info-centre\/defence-forces-history\/defence-forces-medals\/military-medal-for-gallantry\/\">Military Medal for Gallantry (Irish equivalent of the Victoria Cross) and\u00a029 men for the\u00a0Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)<\/a>\u00a0for their actions in Jadotville.<\/p>\n<h3>Recommended for medals<\/h3>\n<p>None of them have yet received their awards. Three \u201cA\u201d Company veterans were also recommended for medals for action two months after Jadotville and they did receive their DSM\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h3>Discovered only a few weeks ago<\/h3>\n<p>Documents related to these recommendations were\u00a0&#8220;misplaced&#8221; in army archives but\u00a0were finally\u00a0discovered only a few weeks ago.\u00a0 The\u00a0documents reveal\u00a0for the first time the names of the five men who were recommended for the<strong> Military Medal for Gallantry\u00a0(MMG)<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a029\u00a0for the <strong>DSM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Recognise the heroism<\/h3>\n<p>The team at &#8220;<strong>Inspiring You<\/strong>&#8221; helped provide a platform for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rKqxEWtihb4\"> young people in Ireland to campaign<\/a> for the government to recognise the heroism of Ireland&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/galwaycc.ie\/mainstream\/wp-content\/heroes-of-the-siege-of-jadotville-honoured-at-gcc-evening\/\">Band of Brothers<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Right a wrong&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/regionals\/fingalindependent\/news\/when-students-changed-the-mind-of-a-government-36232110.html\">Malahide Community School<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.advertiser.ie\/mayo\/article\/93259\/students-role-in-jadotville-campaign-can-be-template-for-social-change\"> Galway Community College<\/a> joined forces to help &#8220;right a wrong&#8221; and shine a light on the bravery of the men of &#8220;A&#8221; Company.<\/p>\n<h3>Schools worked together<\/h3>\n<p>In a determined campaign the team at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspiringyou.ie\/\">Inspiring You<\/a>,\u00a0 teachers and students from both schools worked together.\u00a0 This helped these men get the recognition and apology they deserved.<\/p>\n<h3>Tell their story<\/h3>\n<p>The students wrote letters to politicians, contacted local and national media, got support from the general public, invited some of the soldiers and relatives to their schools to tell their story.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a8vDiDYppK4\"> Catherine Connolly<\/a>, <strong>Galway West TD<\/strong>, raised the students campaign with the <strong>Minister of Defence Paul Kehoe<\/strong> in the<strong> D\u00e1il<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Leaders&#8217; questions drafted by students<\/h3>\n<p>The students even helped to draft a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wv9TzCF2V74\">Leaders\u2019 question<\/a>\u00a0to former<strong> Taoiseach Enda Kenny<\/strong> which was presented by <strong>Galway West TD, Noel Grealish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Former Taoiseach met with representatives<\/h3>\n<p>After a lot of hard work by the staff, students and some political representatives, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/we-literally-would-all-have-died-in-jadotville-but-for-him-1.3273241\">Taoiseach Enda Kenny<\/a> met with some representatives from <strong>\u201cA\u201d Company<\/strong>,\u00a0(two of whom were recommended for medals)\u00a0and the schools involved in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/read-inspiring-helped-make-history-students-around-ireland\/#MedalsforJadotville\">#MedalsforJadotville<\/a>\u00a0campaign.<\/p>\n<h3>Special medal announced<\/h3>\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/awarded-medals-bravery-siege-of-jadotville-3442230-Jun2017\/\">13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of June<\/a> on his last day in office he announced that a special medal recognising the valour of the Irish soldiers would be awarded after 56 years of inaction.<\/p>\n<h3>Awarded to recognise the valiant defence<\/h3>\n<p>History was made when\u00a0a<strong> Unit Citation<\/strong> (1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0in the Irish Army) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/Siege-of-Jadotville-survivors-awarded-special-medals-at-ceremony-in-Athlone\">Bonn Jadotville medal<\/a> (linked to the Unit Citation) was awarded to surviving veterans of\u00a0\u201cA\u201d Company and their families in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/home\/286253\/limerick-man-among-those-awarded-specialmedal-for-jadotville-siege.html\">December 2017 in Custume Barracks, Athlone<\/a>.\u00a0 These medals were awarded to recognise the valiant defence and courage shown by &#8220;A&#8221; Company.<\/p>\n<h3>Medals of bravery yet to be presented<\/h3>\n<p>However the specific 32 medals recommended by \u201cA\u201d <strong>Company Commander Pat Quinlan<\/strong> have NOT YET been <strong>awarded.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this point in the <strong>#MedalsforJadotville<\/strong> and <strong>#Medal4Quinlan<\/strong> campaign it was felt that Col. Quinlan&#8217;s\u00a0recommendations for\u00a0medals for bravery\u00a0were forgotten or misplaced.<\/p>\n<h3>Names of men recommended for awards<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Senator Gerard Craughwell<\/strong> received a copy of the letter which has been unearthed in the last few weeks. At a recent army veteran&#8217;s event he read the names of the men<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lr7oLFBgrNQ&amp;feature=youtu.be\"> recommended for awards\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senator Craughwell<\/strong> echoed the students sentiments that<strong> Col. Quinlan<\/strong> should also be awarded the <strong>MMG<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Students working to honour these men<\/h3>\n<p>In an age where we talk about young people lacking empathy it is refreshing to see students working to honour these men whose legacy was neglected and slighted for decades.<\/p>\n<h3>Wellbeing and mental health<\/h3>\n<p>The wellbeing and mental health of our youth is something we as a nation are working together to protect.\u00a0 What is ironic is that two of the soldiers who fought in Jadotville were only\u00a015-year-old boys and approximately another twelve soldiers were only 16 years old.<\/p>\n<h3>Ignored and isolated<\/h3>\n<p>One of these 16 years old soldiers were recommended for a DSM.\u00a0 Having witnessed violence and traumatic events first hand these young men had to face being ignored and isolated militarily and from society to a degree on returning home.<\/p>\n<h3>Untimely ends<\/h3>\n<p>The men who fought at Jadotville sadly were wrongly perceived as cowards. Tragically having survived the siege without suffering any fatalities a number of the Jadotville veterans met untimely ends in the years after.<\/p>\n<p>Some veterans struggled to deal with their experiences and subsequent treatment by the authorities.<\/p>\n<h3>Tainted legacy perception<\/h3>\n<p>Only 9 men survive from the list of\u00a0<strong>32<\/strong>\u00a0submitted by <strong>Col.
