Claregalway castle<\/a> is a castle like no other. It has been\u00a0and immersed in over 590 years\u00a0of culture, tales, battles, music and\u00a0legend.<\/p>\n

We are honoured to be working with the team from Claregalway<\/a>.\u00a0 Together we will be firing up imaginations of young historians, artists and lovers of culture all over the country.<\/p>\n

Bringing History to Life<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

We believe in “Bringing History to Life<\/strong>“.\u00a0 If your class or group has a particular interest in any aspect of the castle’s history we will work with you to take photos and send you information to aid your research.<\/p>\n

Short videos of the castle can be made to help your project work.<\/p>\n

Something for everyone<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Claregalway Castle<\/a> oozes mystery, history and culture and has something for everyone.<\/p>\n

The castle as it stands today was\u00a0constructed between 1408 and\u00a01440.<\/p>\n

It was the chief fortress of the powerful Norman<\/a> family called Clanricarde De Burgo or Burke from the early 1400s to the mid-1600s.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest battles ever in Ireland<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

On August 19 th, 1504 the Lord of\u00a0Clanrickarde, Ulick Finn Burke,\u00a0fought a pitched battle against\u00a0the Earl of Kildare at “The Battle of Knockdoe<\/a>” in Co. Galway.<\/p>\n

Thousands of men died\u00a0in a single day of unimaginable\u00a0savagery.\u00a0 It is was one of the biggest battles ever fought on Irish soil.<\/p>\n

National symbol of\u00a0Ireland<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

On a musical note\u00a0Henry VIII<\/a> gave Ulick \u201cThe Brian\u00a0Boru harp<\/a>” as a gift to the castle in 1543. It is\u00a0now the national symbol of\u00a0Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Medieval hurling match<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The castle has more than its fair share of “Horrible History<\/a>” stories which we will be sharing each month.\u00a0 There are also amazing connections to\u00a0a Medieval<\/a> hurling match, the Cromwellian conquests<\/a>\u00a0, the Irish War of Independence<\/a>\u00a0, poetic genius W. B. Yeats<\/a>\u200b\u00a0 and even cinema legend Orson Welles<\/a>\u200b!<\/p>\n

Knights fighting in Claregalway<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Every year Claregalway Castle hosts Ireland’s only international medieval combat festival.\u00a0 The winning team takes home the coveted, “Claregalway Castle Shield<\/a>”<\/p>\n

Can your imagination help us?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

The castle’s architecture and historical artefacts that reside there will also be highlighted in the future.<\/p>\n

Together we can bring the stories connected to the castle to life through, art, writing, research, cooking and possibly cartoons!<\/p>\n
