{"id":5472,"date":"2018-02-25T21:38:29","date_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/?p=5472"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:40:20","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:40:20","slug":"read-inspiring-helped-make-history-students-around-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/read-inspiring-helped-make-history-students-around-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"Read how \u201cInspiring You\u201d helped make history with students from around Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5027\" src=\"http:\/\/inspiringyou.ie\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Students-from-Galway-Community-College-Malahide-Community-School-supporting-Inspiringyouirl-Medal4Quinlan-campaign-e1516183955666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you ever doubted the power of young people to show empathy read on!\u00a0 In October 2016 a group of students from Galway Community College and Malahide Community School were moved when they learned of the 56 year long campaign by a group of Irish soldiers for recognition for their acts of bravery which serving with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/index.html\">United Nations<\/a> in Jadotville in the Congo in 1961.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a peace keeping force the 155 men of \u201cA\u201d Company were forced to defend themselves against an enemy force of 3,000.\u00a0 Thanks to the military genius of the late Col.Pat Quinlan all of the men survived.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly due to a number of factors the men were not recognised for their actions and were called \u201ccowards\u201d by the government and the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSOME MIGHT SAY THAT EMPATHY IS LACKING IN THE YOUNGER GENERATION BUT THE STUDENTS FROM GALWAY AND DUBLIN PROVED OTHERWISE WHEN THEY MADE HISTORY BY CHANGING THE MIND OF A GOVERNMENT\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a determined campaign the team at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspiringyou.ie\">Inspiring You<\/a>,\u00a0 teachers and students from both schools worked together to help these men get the recognition and apology they deserved.\u00a0 They wrote letters to politicians, contacted local and national media, got support from the general public, invited some of the soldiers and relatives to their schools to tell their story.\u00a0 The students even helped to draft a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wv9TzCF2V74\">Leaders&#8217; question<\/a> to former Taoiseach Enda Kenny which was presented by Galway West TD, Noel Grealish.<\/p>\n<p>After a lot of hard work the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with some representatives from \u201cA\u201d Company, and the schools involved in the <a href=\"#MedalsforJadotville\">#MedalsforJadotville<\/a> campaign and on the 13<sup>th<\/sup> of June on his last day in office he announced that a special medal recognising the valour of the Irish soldiers would be awarded after 56 years of inaction.<\/p>\n<p>History was made when the medals were presented to the surviving veterans and their families in Custume Barracks, Athlone on Dec. 2<sup>nd<\/sup> 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully the late Col.
